AI in Financial Services (Robo-everything, Deep-learning, Machine-learning)
AI is already present in our everyday financial services interactions in a variety of ways. It supports conversational interfaces – both to engage with customers (chatbots, Alexa skills) as well as specialist tools (Kensho). It allows personalisation – using some machine learning, data and interfaces to offer a unique customer experience. It also helps automation – KYC, Compliance, fraud, robo. What else is in store short-term?
Unbundling and Rebundling in Financial Services (PSD2, APIs, PSD3)
A reconfiguration of the banking value chain is in full swing. There is rampant commoditization of not only products, but also of infrastructure. What is the state of play today? What will ultimately become the basis for differentiation in a commoditized world? Are banking marketplaces the future?
Privacy: the New Frontier (GDPR)
Privacy regulation has been, and still is, the source of much attention and significant cost in the financial services industry. New regulations in the pipeline are intended to protect individuals and allow them to take control of their digital personas. But do they? Are they only hygiene measures or do they form a true differentiator for customers? How differently is privacy perceived in different cultures? Are Spanish customers more or less concerned?
Do Challenger Banks really Challenge?
Some would say that challenger banks are not that different from established institutions nor very “challenging” in nature. They would also say that they have not changed the fundamentals of banking sufficiently to form a differentiated and sustainable value proposition. Have they? What is their secret sauce? Are they fundamentally “changing” banking? Will they be able to attract sufficient market share to become viable?
Regulators as Innovators
Regulators have, traditionally, been more concerned with safeguarding the financial system than with fostering innovation. However, we have seen obvious signs of their changing role in recent years as they have pushed regulation that lowers barriers to entry and increases competition. Furthermore, many are now busy lifting obvious regulatory obstacles to innovation and launching sandboxes. But, are regulators engaging the private sector enough? What should the role of regulators be in innovation?
